Description

This image shows Professor Frank Randall of the Biology Department at Appalachian State University (1967-current) crouching with two students in a Valle Crucis, NC, historical site along the Watauga River in June 1971. Piece of a skeleton are scattered along the ground and smaller pieces are piled in a box in the background. The dig, led by biologist Frank Randall, removed the remains of a female from between 1300 and 1500. The site was revisited by Appalachian State archeology students and faculty in 1975 and 2003, uncovering artifacts between 500 and 7,000 years old.
