Playcrafters, Minstrel Show, 1956, photo 5

Description

This image shows two members of the Playcrafters, the dramatic organization for Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) since 1934, performing a ventriloquism act during a minstrel show in 1956. Student Dell Kemp is seated on another student's knee, wearing black and white facepaint. Other performers are sitting in the background. In February 1956, the Playcrafters performed their annual minstrel show with the theme "River Boat Rhythm," which included a series of small music, dance, and theatrical performances, and cost thirty-five cents per student. It was held in the auditorium of the second Administration Building, built 1924. The Playcrafters performed multiple one-act and three-act plays during the school year, as well as performing in regional and state contests.
