Description
This image shows Appalachian State President Blanford Barnard Dougherty slouching at his desk in the second Administration Building, built 1924, at Appalachian State Teachers College. Along with his brother D. D. Dougherty, B. B. Dougherty co-founded Watauga Academy in 1899, and served as superintendent to Appalachian Training School (1903-1925), and was president of Appalachian State Normal School (1925-1929) and Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967), until his retirement in 1955. During his early term at Appalachian, he taught English and pedagogy, and served in numerous capacities on state boards and commissions. He received a Bachelor of Science from Carson-Newman College in 1896 and a Ph.B. from the University of North Carolina. He died in 1957.
