This image shows two students posing with Chancellor John E. Thomas (1979-1993) outside the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968, after the May 1990 commencement ceremony at Appalachian State University (1967-current). The students' parents are seen taking a photograph on the right, and other students and attendees can be seen in the background. Commencement ceremonies were held in Varsity Gymnasium since the building's completion in 1968. The man standing on the right and wearing dark glasses is Dr. William Bauldry, Professor of Mathematics.
