This image shows the attendees of the groundbreaking ceremony for the new gymnasium at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) in the early 1950s. The gym would later be named Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, completed in 1955 and demolished in the early 2000s. Image includes, in the front row, David Barnard Dougherty, business manager from 1938-1955, Frederick Kirchner, head of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, J. D. Rankin, dean of College, Blanford Barnard Dougherty, president from 1903-1955, and two unidentified people. In the back row is one unidentified man, Preston Mull, professor of Physical Education, Graydon Eggers, professor of English and head of the Department of Languages, and Roger Thomas, professor of Physical Education.
