Title

Women's Athletic Association, basketball, photo 2

Description

This image shows a group of women playing basketball in the Men's Gymnasium, built 1934, at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) during the mid-1950s. A woman throws the basketball towards the goal while another attempts to block her. Women's sports worked through the Women's Athletic Association, which was formed of physical education majors interested in extracurricular activities related to physical and health education. Association activities included games and programs emphasizing physical education and exercise, such as volleyball, softball, speedball, soccer, and basketball, and various intramural programs including badminton, tennis, archery, and ping-pong.
