This image shows the President's Reception, held at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) in 1955 for Appalachian State co-founder and retiring President Blanford Barnard Dougherty. Dougherty can be seen sitting next to Chapell Wilson, director of Graduate Studies. Along with his brother D. D. Dougherty, B. B. Dougherty co-founded Watauga Academy in 1899, and served as superintendent to Appalachian Training School (1903-1925), and was president of Appalachian State Normal School (1925-1929) and Appalachian State Teachers College. During his early term at Appalachian, he taught English and pedagogy, and served in numerous capacities on state boards and commissions. He received a Bachelor of Science from Carson-Newman College in 1896 and a Bachelor of Philosophy degree from the University of North Carolina. He died in 1957.
