Title
Appalachian High School, Student Teachers, circa 1960, photo 3
Description
This image shows two student teachers in an office at Appalachian High School (1938-1965), also known as the Demonstration High School, in Chapell Wilson Hall, built 1938. One woman stands watching while a second types on a typewriter. Books and papers are on bookshelves against the wall, and several papers are tacked up on a board behind the two students. Appalachian High School was a joint venture between Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) and Watauga County Schools, wherein Watauga students would be taught by Appalachian State faculty and students. Students were expected to teach in their field of specialty during the fall, winter, and spring terms of their senior year, including full-time teaching under the guidance of an experienced teacher. By the final term, the student was expected to carry at least half the workload of the supervising teacher. Student teaching was done in Appalachian Elementary School, Appalachian High School, or, when approved, other participating off-campus schools.
