Title
Elementary School Class, 1958, photo 3
Description
This image shows an elementary school class seated at desks in a classroom, while a girl stands next to a map of the United States in the background. The class is identified as a class taught Mrs. Cleone Hodges on May 7, 1958. Cleone Hodges, seated behind the projector on the left, was a professor of health and physical education since 1938. Students are possibly at Appalachian Elementary School, otherwise known as Demonstration Elementary School, which began in the 1920s as a joint venture between Watauga County Schools and Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967), wherein Appalachian State would contribute students and faculty to teach Watauga County students, providing teaching experience in real situations. Appalachian Elementary School was housed in the Education Building, built 1925, until 1954, when it was moved to Whitener Hall. The school program ended in 1975. Appalachian State also provided extension student teaching opportunities at other schools in Watauga and surrounding counties. The photographer was identified only as "Mrs. Chamberlain."
