Convocation, 1958, spring, photo 3

Description

This image shows spring convocation at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) on April 16, 1958. The members of the State Board of Education can be seen standing in front of folding chairs holding white sheets of paper, and the College Choir and speakers sit on the stage. Student and faculty attendees can be seen sitting in folding chairs placed on the basketball court in Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955. The general audience can be seen on bleachers in the background and in the foreground. Spring convocation included attendance by the State Board of Education, and a speech by J. Harris Purks, the executive secretary of the Board. Custom had the freshmen seated on the bleachers on the right, juniors on the left, sophomores on the left, seniors and graduates on the main floor, faculty behind seniors. Attendance was required and roll was taken by the student council. Convocations began in 1954 and were held the beginning of each term.
