Description

This image shows speaker J. Harris Purks, executive secretary of the State Board of Education, speaking behind a podium in Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, during spring convocation at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) on April 16, 1958. J. D. Rankin, president emeritus, can be seen seated in the background on the left, and President William Howard Plemmons is to the right of the speaker. Other speakers are seated on the right, and the Choir is in the background. Spring convocation also included attendance by the State Board of Education. Custom had the freshmen seated on the bleachers on the right, juniors on the left, sophomores on the left, seniors and graduates on the main floor, faculty behind seniors. Attendance was required and roll was taken by the student council. Convocations began in 1954 and were held the beginning of each term.
