This image shows the fall convocation ceremony at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) at Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, on October 17, 1958. Faculty and students can be seen looking at the stage in the background, where speakers are standing, facing the audience. The 1958 fall convocation theme was Homecoming. Speakers included John V. Idol, president of the Alumni Association, John Corey, executive secretary of the Alumni Association, Mrs. Maxie Edmisten, Dean of Women, Dr. J. D. Rankin, Appalachian State president emeritus, and W. H. Plemmons, president. Custom had the freshmen seated on the bleachers on the right, juniors on the left, sophomores on the left, seniors and graduates on the main floor, faculty behind seniors. Attendance was required and roll was taken by the student council. Convocations began in 1954.
