Description
This image shows a student inspecting an exhibit, entitled "[Clo]ud Chamber," at the Northwestern District Science Fair held at Smith-Wright Hall, built 1940, at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) on March 28, 1958. The exhibit includes a chamber to track ion movement, power source to charge the ions, a camera to photograph the ion's tracks, and a display board with handwritten explanations of how the chamber works. The Fair was an exhibition of work from juniors and seniors in high schools from the counties in western North Carolina. Entries involved math and science. Five best exhibits in each of the junior and senior categories would be sent on to the state-wide fair. The Fair was sponsored by the North Carolina Academy of Science and several business firms, and directed by Ray Derrick of the Science Department.
