Description

This image shows a Boone Mayer Gordon H. Winkler administering the oath of office to the Appalachian State Board of Trustees during the fall convocation ceremony held in Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, in November 1957 at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967). Behind the speaker, the Board of Trustees stand, raising their right hands, including President Emeritus James D. Rankin, third from the left. President William Howard Plemmons is seen sitting on the right. The convocation ceremony included speaker Paul A. Johnston, director of the Department of Administration of North Carolina, and guest J. Kemp Doughton, speaker of the House of Representatives in the North Carolina General Assembly, who presented a tribute to the late Blanford Barnard Dougherty. There were also performances by the college band and college choir, and an invocation read by President Emeritus J. D. Rankin.
