Francis Hoover's Effigy, 1957

Description

This image shows an effigy of coach Francis Hoover hanging outside one of the gymnasiums at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967). Hoover graduated from ASTC in 1939, and began teaching in the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation in 1945. He served as end coach for ten years, baseball coach for two years, tennis for one year, basketball for twelve years, and golf for twenty-two years. He was inducted into the Appalachian Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977, the same year he retired. Circumstances surrounding the creation and hanging of the effigy are unknown.
