This image shows a speaker behind a podium addressing graduates and the audience, with Senator Samuel James Ervin, Jr., standing to the right, at a commencement ceremony in the 1970s in the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968, at Appalachian State University (1967-current). Sam Ervin represented North Carolina in the United States Senate from 1954 to 1974. Visible in the background are other commencement speakers, including Dean of the Graduate School Cratis Williams and Chancellor Herbert Walter Wey (1969-1979).
