Harvey Durham

The man behind the podium is Mr. Harvey Gantt, Charlotte architect. Mr. Gantt was the first African-American to be admitted to Clemson University in 1963. In 1983 he was the first African-American to be elected mayor of Charlotte.

This image shows a faculty member at Appalachian State speaking at commencement ceremonies at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in 1990. Commencement was held at the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968. The man behind the podium is Mr. Harvey Gantt, Charlotte architect. Mr. Gantt was the first African-American to be admitted to Clemson University in 1963. In 1983 he was the first African-American to be elected mayor of Charlotte.
