This image shows part of the commencement ceremonies on August 19, 1973, in the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968, at Appalachian State University (1969-current). Dean of the Graduate School Cratis Williams speaks behind a podium, while Chancellor Herbert Walter Wey (1969-1979) stands to his right with an unidentified professor. The signs on the back wall read, "No Smoking." Seated on the far right is Dr. Carl Messere, Professor of Accounting and football coach.
