This image shows part of the commencement ceremonies on August 19, 1973, in the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968, at Appalachian State University (1969-current). Chancellor Herbert Walter Wey (1969-1979) speaks behind a podium as two professors stand ready to place a doctoral hood on a graduate, standing to the right of Chancellor Wey. Standing in the background is Dr. Nicholas Erneston.
