This image shows part of the 1972 commencement ceremony in the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968, at Appalachian State University (1969-current). Dean of the Graduate School Cratis Williams makes a speech behind a podium. Other speakers can be seen sitting in the background. Seated from left to right are Dr. William C. Strickland (Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences), Unknown,Dr. Nicholas Erneston (Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts), Dr. Joseph Logan (Dean of the College of Education)and Dr. Richard Rupp. The wall behind Williams includes a sign reading "No Smoking," with the emblem of the 1921 Southern Conference and a painted head of Yosef, the Appalachian State mascot.
