This image shows musicians Merle and Doc Watson seated in the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968, during commencement ceremonies in 1973. Arthel "Doc" Watson received a Doctor of Folk Arts degree during the commencement ceremony. Students can be seen seated in the bleachers in the background, and the commencement speaker addressing the audience is partially visible behind Merle Watson. Guitars rest behind Merle and Doc Watson's chairs. Seated in the background on the far right is Dr. William C. Strickland, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Seated next to him is Chancellor Herbert W. Wey.
