This image shows a young boy standing in the hallway of one of the participating schools in the Appalachian Training Complex Program. The Appalachian Training Complex Program was a grant-funded program at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the early 1970s, including a lighthouse project examining new methods for teaching students in elementary and high school, and the Training for Teacher Trainers (Triple-T) Project, where teachers already in the work force were retrained with new methods for teaching teachers with students in actual classroom situations. It utilized art, music, and audio-visual materials, a more challenging and individualized curriculum that depended on each student's aptitude in each subject. Appalachian State's program was aimed at Western North Carolina public schools with high dropout rates, low attendance, and poor facilities. The program also served as a training ground for interns and education students from Appalachian State.
