Description
This image shows the baskets of laundry to be cleaned at the University Laundry at Appalachian State University (1967-current). Four employees can be seen in the background, with clothes dryers in the middle background, and boxes for sorting laundry bags' delivery locations. Appalachian State first offered school laundry services to women only in 1914-1915, before which Mondays were designated laundry day and no classes were held. The University Laundry was located in the Services Annex, built 1949, and handled services for Appalachian State, including departments and residence halls. It ceased operation in the early 1990s. Residents were instructed to put their laundry in bags, with special dry cleaning materials on hangers, to be picked up by the Campus Laundry for cleaning. Students paid a fee each semester for laundry service. Eventually token laundry services were offered by the University Bookstore for student use. Campus Laundry services also served departmental needs and offered a drop-off-pick-up service for off-campus students. It ceased operation in the early 1990s.
