Title

Steam Plant, circa 1960

Description

This image shows Steam Generator Plant, built 1924, that housed a steam-powered generator used by the New River Light and Power Company at Appalachian State University (1967-current). New River Light and Power was started two miles south of Appalachian Training School (1903-1925) on the Edminsten Farm in 1915, supplying power generated from the New River to the School and six individual customers in Boone, NC. When New River ceased generating its own power, Appalachian State renovated the building to generate steam heat for the campus. Words on the wall read, "New River Light and Power Co."
