Description
This image shows the Steam Plant at Appalachian State University (1967-current), after renovation in the early 1970s. After New River Light and Power ceased generating its own power in 1972, the Appalachian State steam plant, built 1924 and originally used by New River, was renovated to produce heat for the Appalachian campus, using first coal, then converting in the mid-1970s to oil, before converting back to coal and wood in 1982. Although never meeting emissions standards, the plant wasn't replaced until 1997.
