Title

Windmill Construction, 1979, photo 2

Description

This image shows construction on the windmill atop Howard's Knob in Boone, NC, in May 1979. Sponsored by General Electric, U.S. Department of Energy, Blue Ridge Electrical Membership Co-op, and NASA, the Howard's Knob windmill was part of a movement away from foreign energy sources and was to generate wind-powered energy for Boone residents. Completed in July 1979, the world's largest windmill had blades measuring 220 feet across, and was estimated that, with 25 mph wind, it would generate enough power for 300 homes. However, the windmill never generated any energy, and was dismantled in August 1983.
