Title

Duck Pond, circa 1975, photo 1

Description

This image shows the duck pond, now part of Tomlinson Park, located south of Rivers Street, across from Rankin Science Complex. Since 1927, the pond was present on Appalachian State campus. Ducks populated the pond steadily until the early 1980s, when the University sought to limit the amount of ducks in residence. After some controversy, including a group attempting to shoot the ducks at night and failing, many were rounded up by a local restaurant. Two ducks can be seen swimming in the foreground, with several others in the back on the left. In the background is Bowie Residence Hall, built 1966.
