Description

This image shows a group photo of students taking part in school contests at Appalachian Elementary School on February 4, 1955. Students are being presented with trophies on a stage, while the school band sits at the base of the stage. Some guests can be seen in the auditoriums seats in the foreground. Appalachian Elementary School, also known as Demonstration Elementary School, was a joint venture between Watauga County schools and Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967), wherein Watauga County students would be taught by Appalachian State faculty and students. It was originally held on Appalachian State campus in the Education Building, originally built as Boone Grade School in 1925, before being moved to Whitener Hall, built 1954. The program ended in 1975.
