Title
Freshman Registration, 1955, photo 3
Description
This image shows freshman registration in September 1955. A line of students sign up for classes at individual tables, each designated for a specific subject. The line can be seen curving around in the background, and students are seen holding copies of the Bulletin of Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967). Freshmen were required to sign up for and attend in their first semester a course on college life, and were registered before transfer and upper class students. Out of over 1,700 enrollees in fall 1955, 537 freshman and 118 transfers entered Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967), compared to only 441 freshmen in 1954. The steady increase was helped by the G. I. Bill, under which 370 veterans were attending Appalachian in 1955.
