Description
Dances, formal and informal, usually peppered the academic year at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967). On February 5, 1955, for example, an informal dance was held at the Women's Gymnasium, built 1924, by the Music Department. It included a newly organized band, under the direction of Mr. Spencer of the Music Department. In April there was another dance, the annual Junior-Senior, held at the Men's Gymnasium, built 1934, with the theme of "April Showers." These were in addition to the annual Homecoming, Christmas, and May Day festivities, that usually included dances. This image shows an overhead view of a handful of couples dancing on the basketball court in a mostly-empty gymnasium. An open door to the left shows the image to be taken during the daytime. This image appears in the 1954 Rhododendron (p. 24).
