Title

Dr. Adolph Crew, Visiting Summer Faculty, 1954

Description

This image shows Dr. Adolph Crew standing in the doorway of Chapell Wilson Hall, built 1938, on July 7, 1954. Dr. Crew served as part of the visiting summer faculty at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) for the summer of 1954, and served as principal of the Appalachian High School (1938-1965), otherwise known as the Demonstration High School, for 1954-1958. Due to an average upsurge in enrollment for the summer school among active teachers and students, and the unavailability of regular faculty during this time, Appalachian regularly employed visiting faculty during the summer period, teaching select courses from the regular curriculum and offering graduate work towards a master's of arts degree in education. Plaque above the door reads,. Built by Works Progress Administration, North Carolina, in cooperation with the state government, 1930-1937." Part of this image appears in "The Appalachian" on September 17, 1954.
