Description

This image shows members of the Science Club's Label Tree Program in March 1954 in front of the second Administration Building, built 1924. Also called Operation Marker, the Club designed name plates identifying the most prominent trees on campus in February, and in March put them on the trunks of the trees. From left to right, Edith June Sheets, Chris Elliot, Dorothy Travis, Maxine Hartman, Dr. Arnold Van Pelt, David Barnhardt, Jean Hopkins, Michael Harrelson, unknown, Dr. Irwin Watson Carpenter, and Charles Hancock. David Barnhardt can be seen pointing at one of the labels already attached to the tree in the middle of the image. The tags were made out of copper and bore the scientific and common names of the tree.
