This image shows a line of graduating students walking on College Field for commencement exercises. By 1948, the Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) summer school was composed of regular students as well as graduate students working towards a master's degree. Teachers already in the workforce would attend the summer school as it did not interfere with the regular school year. There were 165 graduate degrees conferred in the summer of 1954.
