Title

North Carolina Holstein Association Field Day Exercises, 1954, photo 10

Description

This image shows North Carolina Holstein Association Field Day Exercises on June 24, 1954. Seen are an unidentified group of men and women standing in an open field. Cars are parked at the extreme sides of the photograph, and part of a white building can be seen in the background to the left. A line of women in the foreground wearing bonnets carry buckets, reading "June is Dairy Month." Inside the buckets are pints of milk. A wooden crate carrying glass jars filled with milk rests at their feet. While Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) did not maintain an official agriculture or livestock program as part of the curriculum, ASTC did maintain a farm with a working dairy as part of the College's food production, a program in place since Watauga Academy (1899-1903). The dairy housed by the 1960s approximately 200 Holsteins at the Edminsten Farm, until it ceased operation in 1964. In addition, a Future Farmers of America chapter existed at Appalachian High School (1938-1965).
