Title

Homecoming Parade, 1953

Description

This image shows a float for the 1953 Homecoming parade at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967). The float is being pulled behind a car, with Chapell Wilson Hall, built 1938, seen in the background. Several women students stand on the float in modern and early 1900s style clothing, under a sign reading, "Congratulations to Appalachian for 50 Years of Progress." Appalachian celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1953, from the date Watauga Academy became a state-supported institution known as Appalachian Training School (1903-1925). The School had been co-educational since its founding as Watauga Academy in 1899.
