Description
This image shows Blanford Barnard (B. B.) Dougherty at his desk at Appalachian State Teachers College. Along with his brother D. D. Dougherty, B. B. Dougherty co-founded Watauga Academy in 1899, and served as superintendent to Appalachian Training School (1903-1925), and was president of Appalachian State Normal School (1925-1929) and Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967), until his retirement in 1955. During his early term at Appalachian, he taught English and pedagogy, and served in numerous capacities on state boards and commissions. He received a Bachelor of Science from Carson-Newman College in 1896 and a Ph.B. from the University of North Carolina. He died in 1957.
