Description

This item is part of the I. G. Greer Folksong Collection which consists of more than 300 individual song titles and their variants as collected by Isaac Garfield Greer (1881-1967) from informants, primarily in Ashe, Wilkes and Watauga counties. The collection includes manuscripts, typescript transcriptions produced by Dr. Greer’s clerical staff, and handwritten musical notations. Songs range from traditional Child Ballads, traditional English and Scottish ballads as well as their American variants, to 19th century popular music to musical compositions of local origin.

Jack and Joe

Three years ago when Jack & Joe set sail across the foam, They each one vowed a
fortune to make be-fore returning home. In just one year Jack gained his wealth &
started home one day, and when the pals shook hands to part poor Joe could only say:

Give my love to Nellie Jack, and kiss her once for me The fairest girl in all the world I
know you'll say 'tis she. Treat her kindly Jack, old pal. Tell her that I'm well. His
parting words were "Don't forget to give my love to Nell.
