This image shows President William Howard Plemmons (1955-1969) giving a speech on a stage during one of the Commencement ceremonies in Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) in the 1960s. Other commencement speakers can be seen sitting in the background. Seated in the background on the left is Dr. Frank Randall, Professor of Biology. Seated next to him is Dr. Ben Strickland, Assistant Dean of the Graduate School and later Registrar. Plemmons had served various educational posts with the University of North Carolina since 1941, and was executive secretary of the North Carolina State Education Commission for three years. He took over the post from interim president J. D. Rankin, who retired in September 1955, and served as Appalachian president until his retirement. He died in 1984.

Seated in the background on the left is Dr. Frank Randall, Professor of Biology. Seated next to him is Dr. Ben Strickland, Assistant Dean of the Graduate School. Dr Strickland was later to become the Registrar before he became the Dean of the College of Education.
