Description

This image shows President William Howard Plemmons and Mr. Gordon Winkler, Mayor of Boone standing on the construction site of Duncan Hall, completed 1965, holding shovels. Plemmons was president of Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) from 1955 to 1969. He had served various educational posts with the University of North Carolina since 1941, and was executive secretary of the North Carolina State Education Commission for three years. He took over the post from interim president J. D. Rankin, who retired in September 1955, and served as Appalachian president until his retirement. He died in 1984.
