This image shows two African-American students standing outside holding books and binders at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in October 1975. Standing on the right is freshman Doris Foxworth, winner of the Miss Black Culture pageant. The Miss Black Culture Pageant was part of the Celebration of Black Beauty week, and included eleven African-American contestants, and the winner would participate in the Miss ASU pageant in November 1975. The Celebration of Black Beauty event was sponsored by the Black Cultural Committee and included a performance by the dance group Festival Africaine, the Miss Black Culture pageant, speeches, art exhibits, and musical performances.
