Black Beauty Week, 1975, photo 1

This image shows two women talking in front of D. D. Dougherty Library, built 1935, at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in October 1975. The woman on the right was a contestant in the Miss Black Culture contest, part of the Celebration of Black Beauty week. It included eleven African-American contestants, and the winner would participate in the Miss ASU pageant in November 1975. The Celebration of Black Beauty event was sponsored by the Black Cultural Committee and included a performance by the dance group Festival Africaine, the Miss Black Culture pageant, speeches, art exhibits, and musical performances.
