Description

This image shows five faculty and administrators standing in front of Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, watching a jogging contest held at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the late 1960s. President William Howard Plemmons (1955-1969) can be seen second from the left. The administrators presented awards at the end of the contest. Man smoking a pipe is Dr. Carl Messere, head football coach and Accounting faculty member. Next to him is Dr. Wiley Smith, Psychology faculty. Next to Dr. Smith, but slightly in front of him is Mr. Paul Mance who later would become Appalachian State wrestling coach.
