Man smoking a pipe is Dr. Carl Messere. Next to him is Dr. Wiley Smith. Next to Dr. Smith, but slightly in front of him is Mr. Paul Mande who later would become Appalachian’s wrestling coach.

This image shows three students jogging down Appalachian Street during a jogging contest at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the late 1960s. Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, and onlookers, can be seen in the background. On the left, Man smoking a pipe is Dr. Carl Messere. Next to Messere is Dr. Wiley Smith. Next to Dr. Smith, but slightly in front of him is Mr. Paul Mance who later would become Appalachian State wrestling coach.
