This image shows students attending May Day Play Day, the annual May Day festival held at Sanford Mall at Appalachian State University (1967-current) on May 8, 1971. Students can be seen standing on the mall in groups, with booths and Welborn Hall, built 1925, in the background. The May Day Play Day in 1971 was organized with a New Orleans Bourbon Street theme, and included jazz music, booths, games, a coin-toss, an ice cream parlor, sideshows, body painting, pea shooting, the Appalette's egg combat booth, and the Golden Capers' pie throwing contest.
