Description
This image shows two women standing behind boards after being hit with pies during the pie throwing contest during the May Day Play Day, the annual May Day festival held at Sanford Mall at Appalachian State University (1967-current) on May 8, 1971. The pie throwing contest was sponsored by the Golden Capers. Other students can be seen in the background on the left. The May Day Play Day in 1971 was organized with a New Orleans Bourbon Street theme, and included jazz music, booths, games, a coin-toss, an ice cream parlor, sideshows, body painting, pea shooting, the Appalette's egg combat booth, and the Golden Capers' pie throwing contest. L. S. Dougherty Hall, built 1961, Workman Hall, built 1938, and Lucy Brock Nursery School, built 1965, can be seen in the background.
