Description

This image a student riding an inner tube on river in Western North Carolina in the 1970s, as part of summer camp activities at Camp Broadstone in Valle Crucis, NC. Camp Broadstone was purchased by the State of North Carolina, Watauga County, and the newly formed Appalachian School Camp, Inc., in 1961 for ten dollars. Appalachian School Camp, Inc., was formed to manage the property as an education tool for elementary and high school students, as well as to provide teaching experience in an outdoor setting. Camp Broadstone is a multi-use facility run by the the Office of Conferences and Institutes at Appalachian State University (1967-current).
