Description

This image shows Boone mayor buying the first ticket to a the Mountaineer Playhouse play at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in 1971. Professor Ed Pilkington can be seen handing Mr. A.E. McCreary, Boone businessman, a ticket in front of the Mountaineer Playhouse sign outside Chapell Wilson Hall, built 1938. The Mountaineer Playhouse was a community theatre company established in the summer of 1971 by Professor Ed Pilkington in the Department of Speech and Theatre. Working primarily out of Chapell Wilson Hall, the group performed summer productions using local professional actors and student interns. The whole sign reads, "Mountaineer Playhouse, Now Playing, Thousand Clowns."
