Description
This image shows a man in a suit pointing a pistol at a gun range used by the Department of Military Science at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1970s. Students and officers can be seen watching in the background. The Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) began in the fall of 1969 and is housed in the Department of Military Science in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. It offers two-year programs in leadership and military training with no obligation of future military service, and an additional two-year program that results in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard.
