Appalachian Loft, interior, photo 1

Description

This image shows a woman cooking in the kitchen at the Appalachian Loft in New York in the 1970s. The New York Loft project was started in September 1974 by the Appalachian State University (1967-current) Department of Art to establish a campus presence in New York, NY, and to provide an intensive cultural experience for students. It was originally located at 67 Vestry Street and could lodge up to 12 students, faculty, and staff at one time. Neighborhood concerns and deteriorating building condition eventually led to the purchase of a condominium, which opened in December 1998. The current Appalachian Loft is located at 117 East 24th Street in Gramercy Park and houses up to 22 visitors.
