Lighthouse Program, class, circa 1970, photo 1

Description

This image shows a girl doing schoolwork in a classroom in one of the participating schools in the Lighthouse Program. The Lighthouse Program was part of the Appalachian Training Complex, a grant-funded program at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the early 1970s to examine new methods for teaching students in elementary and high school. It utilized art, music, and audio-visual materials, a more challenging and individualized curriculum that depended on each student's aptitude in each subject. Appalachian State's program was aimed at Western North Carolina public schools with high dropout rates, low attendance, and poor facilities. The program also served as a training ground for interns and education students from Appalachian State. The program began with a Pilot Lighthouse School Program at Valle Crucis Elementary School to test the effectiveness of new teaching methods in a typical isolated Western North Carolina School, and was later expanded into three counties.
